Our Funding and Support

The Agricultural Sustainability Institute (ASI) at UC Davis is comprised of several units – the UC Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program (SAREP), the UC Davis Student Farm, and the Russell Ranch Sustainable Agriculture Facility.

ASI’s activities are guided by a shared mission and vision and strategic direction is provided through an External Advisory Board comprised of leaders from a wide range of differing fields, including farmers and ranchers; agricultural, environmental, and community organizations; food manufacturers and retailers; educators; policymakers; and the media. We follow core operational principles to ensure the sustainability, legitimacy, usefulness, and credibility of our actions. Read our Strategic Snapshot at October 2011 to obtain an overview of our strategic planning and main programmatic and communications activities.

ASI’s annual funding (fiscal year 10/11) is approximately $4.3 million, a sum that includes the total amount of new grants, gifts and endowments awarded throughout the year plus UC Davis institutional support, ASI endowment income, and a small amount of program income.  Due to the state funding climate in California, our institutional support levels have been reduced.  Thus, growing our external support through a variety of avenues will be critical for enabling ASI to fully realize our mission and vision.  For example, philanthropic and grant support allows ASI to offer scholarships to deserving students, research more sustainable farming practices, offer trainings for educators implementing school gardens, continue a 100-year agricultural sustainability experiment, and more.

Gifts of all sizes can help build and strengthen ASI programs. Donate securely online.   (Note: This giving link takes you to a secure site managed by the UC Davis development office).

ASI gratefully acknowledges contributions received since the launch of the Institute in 2006 and would like to extend our sincere gratitude to those who have provided support for our programs.

*Grants and gifts are listed by the fiscal year in which the funds were committed (i.e. start date of project). For multi-year commitments, the total amount is reported in the fiscal year in which the funds were initially committed. Endowments are reported in the fiscal year of the initial gift or grant; annual payouts commence after 12 months and are determined by the Regents of the University of California or the UC Davis Foundation Board of Trustees (approximate payout of 4-5% annually).  Funds awarded are rounded to the nearest hundred. Those items marked with an asterisk are affiliated funds involving ASI faculty and staff, but managed outside ASI.
