Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems Major

by admin last modified Jun 06, 2017 12:27 PM

Students pursuing a Bachelors of Science in Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems (SA&FS) are interested in improving the social, economic, and environmental aspects of sustainability in agriculture and food systems. The major is designed to provide students with broad preparatory course work  and substantial flexibility in their upper division course selections in order to develop the diversity and depth of knowledge required for working in the food system. The food system incorporates farmers, retailers, distributors, growers, laborers, and consumers. The program  will draw substantially from both natural and social sciences to prepare graduates in interdisciplinary and systems-based thinking, that will allow them to excel in agricultural and food systems professions.

Prospective students should read enrollment details for more information regarding the major.

Current students and faculty seeking advising forms and other planning tools can visit the General Advising, Restricted Electives, and Internship Program tabs on the website to find more information regarding the major.

Our mission is:

    • to connect students and community members who are passionate about sustainable agriculture and supporting our food system
    • to engage this community in food system activities
    • to help sustain majors that focus on sustainability, food, and agriculture
    • and to create a CSA, or community supported academics, space for students to get their academic questions answered

Instead of meetings, we will in Winter Quarter 2017  hold three major events: The Food Systems Internship Fair in February, A Field Trip to the Haagen Daaz Honey Bee Haven in march, and a Donation Drive/Volunteer Event at the Migrant Workers Center in Sacramento in March.
