The UC Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program (SAREP) is a statewide program within UC Agriculture and Natural Resources and is a unit of the Agricultural Sustainability Institute at UC Davis.

SAREP provides leadership and support for scientific research and education in agricultural and food systems that are economically viable, conserve natural resources and biodiversity, and enhance the quality of life in the state's communities. SAREP serves farmers, farmworkers, ranchers, researchers, educators, regulators, policy makers, industry professionals, consumers, and community organizations across the state.

Our goals

  • To assist California farmers and ranchers in developing and implementing sustainable production and marketing systems; and
  • To support California's rural and urban communities in understanding the concept and value of sustainable agriculture and participating in sustainable food and agricultural systems

How we work

We compile, analyze, and translate existing academic research around a variety of agriculture and food systems topics to ensure research is accessible and useful.

  • We builds networks between researchers and practitioners to improve how we conduct academic research, and strengthen local efforts by providing relevant data and data analysis.
  • We create tools for farmers and local food system practitioners to assess and strengthen their own agricultural and marketing practices.
  • We assesses existing programs to help them meet changing needs and serve as examples for burgeoning efforts throughout the state.
  • We conduct original research on issues that cut across disciplines and work with stakeholders to ensure research is useful credible.
