California elderberries have rich benefits for farms and diets

Native California elderberries can be found at the intersection of sustainable farming, super nutrition and economic viability. Naturally drought tolerant, flavorful and packed with nutrients, they are capturing the interest of farmers, health-conscious consumers and scientists.

Creating online training for organic specialty crop production in California

Sonja Brodt (Coordinator of Agriculture, Resources, and Environment at UC SAREP) and Sara Riegler (UC SAREP Graduate Student Researcher) recently had the opportunity to visit and record field demonstration videos at ALBA in Salinas. The videos, all recorded in Spanish and focused on ALBA farmers\u2019 organic farming practices, will be part of a comprehensive online curriculum geared towards beginner organic farmers in California, a project in collaboration with the Organic Farming Research Foundation.

Yisrael Family Urban Farm partners with UC ANR to teach urban agriculture skills

A number of cities in California have recently updated municipal policies to facilitate urban agriculture, due to strong community interest. A team of UC Cooperative Extension farm advisers, specialists and others, including UC SAREP, are working with local partners in four California urban regions, offering a series of workshops to help urban farmers address challenges they face in zoning, soil, water access, and profitability.

Farm to School Tours for Policy Makers Lead to Active Policy Dialogue

In late September, the UC Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program hosted a tour of Sacramento public school kitchens and gardens to introduce policy makers to Farm to School efforts in Sacramento and promote a dialogue around how policy can build a strong Farm to School network in the region.

Tour attendees learned from school Food Service Directors about the complexity of planning healthy, locally sourced meals for students, and from Garden Educators about the role garden-based education plays in promoting healthy eating.

UC provides the resources to help Urban Ag succeed

The UC Agriculture and Natural Resources Division (UC ANR) released a portal for Urban Ag enthusiasts and farmers at the beginning of July. Trees in Crop Fields – boosting a farm’s natural economy

The mid-afternoon sun beats down on the dry earth as Elleman Mumba takes us to the cool shade of his musangu trees – tall 8-year-old trees that he has planted in wide rows in the middle of the crop fields where he grows maize and other annual crops for food and sale. Mr. Mumba is one of a growing number of farmers across Zambia and other southern African countries who are bucking conventional wisdom that planting trees in crop fields creates competition with the standing crop for sunlight, water, and nutrients.
