Job Summary: The Student Farm, a 23 acre organic educational farm and garden on the UC Davis Campus is hiring a position to coordinate the farm-based food access program called Fresh Focus. Under supervision from the Student Farm Director, the Fresh Focus Staff Coordinator will lead the Fresh Focus program and support Market Garden activities. The Fresh Focus program works to increase awareness across campus about food systems and food security and engages students directly in learning activities that address important related issues. Specifically, this position will supervise up to four Lead Student Farmers (student employees) and 9-12 interns each quarter in growing and gleaning food for donation. The position will also support Market Garden crop production activities - including leading groups of interns. The person in this position will mentor students engaged in diverse learning opportunities related to food production, distribution, access and justice. The person in this role will support Lead Student Farmers in partner stewardship and student food access. Roughly ~ 6 hours/week will be computer based or in meetings; ~6 hours/week will be Fresh Focus program coordination and student mentorship and ~8 hours/week will be work in collaboration with the Market Garden coordinator to support teaching and food access efforts. Job duties:

CONDUCT OUTREACH AND DEVELOP RELATIONSHIPS AND PROGRAMS (35%)

  • Coordinate with the Basic Needs Center and other food access partners (ASUCD Pantry, EOP, Native American Academic Student Success Center, Center for African Diaspora Student Success, AB540 and Undocumented Student Program and LGBTQQIA+ Resource Center) to distribute free produce from the Student Farm
  • Coordinate with Market Garden staff around production and harvest planning, and assist with Market Garden production activities including crop planning, bed preparation, weed management, harvesting, packing and other activities as needed for roughly 8 hours per week
  • Supervise Lead Student Farmers in coordinating with Ecological Garden staff to identify appropriate crops, and harvest and distribute crops from the Ecological Garden and Flower Project and manage the Fresh Focus refrigerator and produce distribution at the Ecological Garden
  • Conduct outreach to diverse academic, cultural and student groups and programs on campus, such as leading tours for courses or campus partners
  • Collaborate with diverse partners to develop joint projects related to food, culture, food security and agriculture
  • Participate in Student Farm staff meetings, Market Garden meetings and Student Farm events

OVERSEE ACTIVITIES, MENTOR STUDENTS AND DEVELOP LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES (35%)

  • Mentor and supervise students engaged in field, classroom and community activities related to food production, harvesting, distribution, access and justice through internships, courses, and volunteer positions.
  • Manage Fresh Focus Lead Student Farmers and Fresh Focus internship program. This currently includes four student employees and 40 or more interns per year - including onboarding and orientation, safety training, and creating supportive learning environments.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT (30%)

  • Represent the Fresh Focus Food Access program to students, faculty, staff, administrators and the public.
  • Prepare an annual report summarizing accomplishments.

Minimum education/experience:

  • Skills and experience working collaboratively in teams as well as in the role of supervisor/mentor.
  • Experience with Word, Excel, and Powerpoint software

Minimum knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Skills and experience in community-based work with diverse groups, particularly in areas related to food and agriculture.
  • Knowledge of issues that may impact individuals and groups that are traditionally underrepresented in higher education and positions of power, particularly as they relate to food and agriculture.
  • Knowledge and experience related to crop production and harvesting, handling, and distributing crops.
  • Excellent communication skills, including speaking, listening, and writing for diverse audiences.
  • Organizational skills needed for effectively managing and prioritizing diverse projects and responsibilities and for organizing events and programs.

Preferred Education/Experience:           

  • Bachelor's Degree in Agriculture, Food, Nutrition, Community Development, Education or Related Field.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) :

  • Experience facilitating experiential learning opportunities.
