Job Summary

The Student Farm serves UC Davis students and faculty and the public with diverse learning, teaching, research and outreach opportunities focused on the plant sciences and sustainable agriculture and food systems. Knowledge and skills are developed within diverse classroom, laboratory and in-field settings through formal courses, student internships, scientific experimentation and programs offered to a variety of campus and public audiences. The Student Farm collaborates with college and other campus faculty and staff, student organizations, statewide UC personnel and various public, private and non-profit organizations in developing and delivering its programs, which include an internship program that hosts up to 40 students each quarter.

The Children’s Garden Program at the Student Farm provides services, resources and professional development within the region and across the state related to garden-based learning and school garden development. The program serves a diverse group of children, teachers, parents and UC Davis students by creating and offering garden-based learning opportunities and programs. Each year a cohort of UC Davis students learn garden-based teaching methods (PLS193) taught by a UCD lecturer or faculty member. These students guide field trips for K-5 students from schools in the surrounding region. There are typically 4 tours per week from March – June hosting approximately 1600 children from approximately 30 area schools annually. The program serves students and faculty in EDU 142 and has the potential to be more closely coordinated with several majors within CAES as well as other colleges.

The Farm and Garden Education Coordinator will develop culturally relevant and responsive programming for the Children’s Garden Program and other Student Farm efforts, coordinate educational programming related to internal and external tours, and coordinate and manage all aspects of the Children’s Garden program.
